3.18 "I Know What You'll Do Next Summer"

Aired May 15, 2007

Details

Mars residence: Veronica and Piz are sitting on Veronica's bed, studying and cutely elbowing each other to distraction, when Keith pops in to quiz Veronica for the upcoming private eye exam. Veronica gives the correct answer both times before claiming that she plans to beat her dad's score and mock him at every available opportunity. When she suggests he bother Piz rather than her, Piz tells him he's reading Soldier of Misfortune, a memoir by a Hearst student, Apollo Bukenya, who was a child soldier in Unganda. Piz is interviewing Apollo on his radio show before Oprah gets her chance or Hollywood turns the book into a blockbuster. Keith expresses his happiness that Veronica's dating someone who has more to talk about than surfing, but the praise is interrupted when Keith gets a phone call.

Sheriff's department: Keith informs the deputies that the seventh robbery in the past thirteen days has occurred in the '09 zip code. He impresses upon them the seriousness of the situation as the media will pick up on the burglaries as a crime wave. Unfortunately for Keith, the residents/voters of the prestigious zip are neither happy nor patient. Keith also reveals the answer to one of Neptune's longest running mysteries: Sacks' first name is Jerry.

Classroom: About twenty men struggle over an exam. Veronica appears to breeze through it with a smile.

Hearst College: In VO, Veronica remarks upon the job fair she's strolling through, calling it a 'feeding frenzy' as eager representatives hand her flyers. She mentions she's still waiting on the FBI internship.

KRFF studio: Apollo talks about his time in the Lord's Resistance Army as Veronica slips quietly into the studio. Piz asks about Apollo's professor and mentor, Lisa Tonin, mentioning they had a relationship prior to Apollo's matriculation at Hearst. After the interview, Veronica praises Piz, and he tells her that he was offered an internship with Pitchfork Media in New York. Veronica appears genuinely excited for him, and while he's obviously glad, he seems less-than-thrilled at her ignorance of the fact that they'd be apart for twelve weeks.

Sheriff's department: Sacks (or can we call him Jerry?) informs Keith that Veronica is calling. Veronica gloats that she not only passed the PI exam, she beat Keith's score by two points. He tells her he actually scored two points higher than she did, and when she doesn't believe him, he has her open his desk to find the test as proof. Keith teases her, saying that she might be better suited behind the receptionist's desk when Mars Investigations gets a call.

Mars Investigations: The caller tells Veronica he thinks he's found the son he never knew he had and he'd like her to find proof. He tells her the son's name is Apollo Bukenya.

Opening Credits

Wallace's room: Wallace reads aloud to Veronica from Solider of Misfortune. The passage is about Apollo's mother, and both Wallace and Veronica seem affected by the book. When Veronica tells Wallace she's excited about the possibility to reunite Apollo with his father, Kizza Oneko, Wallace is skeptical, assuming Veronica's client is only after Apollo's money. Veronica says her client e-mailed her a PDF file of a letter he had from Apollo's mother, and she details her plan compare the letter with something of Apollo's to make more certain of the parentage before asking about a blood test. She also reveals that Kizza has no money to pay her and calls her from a pay phone. Before she leaves, she asks Wallace to tell Piz she was there, mostly because she wanted him to go to second base. Wallace warns her against breaking Piz's heart.

Sheriff's department: Keith questions a man, Tommy Shaw, regarding the robberies because he was caught trying to pawn some of the stolen merchandise. Cliff is the lowlife's lawyer, and he does a good job of protecting his client, even if it appears to strain his friendship with Keith. Keith mentions each break-in seems professional and the security systems were disarmed: the sheriff obviously doubts Tommy's ability to pilot such an operation. When Tommy stretches his arms behind his head, he reveals a cloverleaf tattoo on his bicep, and Keith concludes Tommy is working for the Fitzpatricks.

Hearst College: Veronica paces until a class lets out. She catches up to Apollo and his girlfriend, Olympia, and posing as a reporter from The Hearst Free Press, Veronica asks for an interview. He appears reluctant, but at Olympia's urging, he agrees to meet Veronica later that day.

Hearst cafeteria: Logan and Parker are having lunch with Parker's parents. Every time Parker speaks, her father cuts her off or shoots down her idea, and her mother reproves her for having her elbows on the table. Logan watches the exchange, looking slightly horrified. When Mr. Lee turns his questions on him, Logan looks as though he might have eaten some bad wheat flour.

Apollo's room: Veronica is met by Apollo's roommate, Harry, just as she's about to knock. She goes in to find Apollo playing Grand Theft Auto, and he jokingly tells her not to report on his gaming. He tells her about surviving in Uganda as a child soldier, and Veronica is so caught up in his story, she almost forgets her reason for interviewing him.

Logan's suite: Logan obviously doesn't think the Lees liked him, and Parker remarks that her parents were probably affected by the undoubtedly R-rated Google report. When she frets about moving back to Denver for the summer, Logan offers her lodging in his suite at the Grand. She misinterprets his offer as an invitation to cohabitate, and he abashedly tells her about a surf trip to South America he'd been planning with Dick. Parker is incensed that he's not more concerned about being apart for three months.

Apollo's room: Apollo goes on to tell Veronica about the day he was taken from his mother. He says that his best friend, James, had to shoot his mother when she came to plead for his release. Veronica asks Apollo if he has any mementos from his mother, and he produces the shopping list she wrote for him. She compares the writing sample with the e-mail from Kizza, revealing a match.

Hearst Library: Parker consults Veronica about Logan's flip behavior, and Veronica assures her it's just how Logan is. She inquires as to why Parker's not discussing her concerns with Mac, and Parker tells her Mac has started seeing someone new.

Max's room: Mac opens the door to retrieve a pizza delivery while clad in a suspiciously masculine button-down. The pizza guy grins, and Mac assures him she's changed clothes. As she brings the pizza to Max, she insists upon attending her classes in the morning. She asks him when he was last at class, and he flippantly tells her it's been since February. Mac's alarmed, and Max calmly tells her business has been booming and he's just waiting to be expelled.

Hearst Library: Veronica looks for a book on the shelves and comes face-to-face with Logan. She calls him on waiting for her, then asks if he's boning up on South American culture and conversational Portuguese. He's surprised she's knows about his trip, and she blithely informs him that Parker told her, going on to say that Parker was upset Logan didn't tell her about the trip. When he asks if they took turns performing voodoo on his likeness, she tells him she told Parker that's just how he is.

Hearst cafeteria: Veronica is eating alone when Piz arrives with the good news that he was offered another internship, this one at KRAQ, a top 40 radio station in Neptune. He gives her a run down of the fast and dirty comparison between the Pitchfork job and the KRAQ job (reviewing music he likes in New York versus radio in Neptune). Veronica is just as pleased, and when Piz seems indecisive, she tells him to choose whatever will get him the job he wants in the long run. They're interrupted by a phone call from Kizza, and Veronica tells him to catch a flight to California because she has good news.

Hearst College: Veronica calls Apollo and asks for a meeting. He asks her if she could meet him at the library as soon as possible.

Sheriff's department: Liam Fitzpatrick shows up to talk to Keith after receiving a "polite" invitation from a deputy. Keith tells him about his meeting with Tommy Shaw and his lackey's connection to the burglaries. Liam asks after Tommy, mentioning that he hadn't seen him since the late Mrs. Shaw's wake in 2005. Keith is unimpressed with the lie, but Liam tosses back Keith's obvious lack of evidence tying him to the robberies. Keith assures Liam that he'll continue to round up the Fitzpatrick flunkies until one sells Liam up the river for a lesser sentence, noting that Lamb is no longer sheriff. Liam casually threatens that as long as the robberies continue, Keith won't have the position much longer either, but mentions that the crimes might stop if he found out what happened to Kendall Casablancas and his money. Keith tells him Kendall's dead, probably buried in a shallow grave, and the money was never Liam's in the first place.

Hearst Library: Apollo introduces Veronica to Wilson Behan, the editor of The Hearst Free Press. Veronica knows she's caught, so she tells Apollo the truth. When she shows Apollo Kizza's letter and tells him that Kizza left Uganda not knowing that Apollo's mother was pregnant, Apollo tells her that the handwriting could have been forged because his mother's shopping lost was printed in his hometown paper. Apollo refuses the take the blood test to confirm Kizza's paternity.

Hearst College: Mac angsts over Max's flippancy over getting expelled, and she worries about falling for him and dropping out of college. Veronica tells her that she's happy with Piz, citing a lack of "adrenaline and nausea" in the relationship.

Mars Investigations: Veronica is on the phone with Harry, looking for Apollo. Harry tells her he hasn't seen him, but to check with Zeke Molinda, the head of the African Student Alliance. He recants, mentioning a falling out between Zeke and Apollo, but goes on to tell Veronica to check with Dr. Tonin. Kizza enters and is skeptical when he finds out Veronica is the detective, made even more so by the ridiculous furry cat pen Veronica is using to take notes.

Sheriff's department: Carl of the Homeowners Association tells Keith of his concerns over the unresolved robberies and mentions they're considering supporting Vinnie in the election. Sacks gives Keith a file, and Keith asks Carl what home security system he uses. When he tells Keith he uses Safe House, Keith recommends he replace it.

Hearst College: Logan catches up with Parker, but she doesn't want to get into an argument before her class. She's upset at the possibility of him cheating on her, and he suggests she go along on his trip. She responds enthusiastically, but Logan doesn't look like he's thrilled to have her along.

Elsewhere, Veronica is waiting for Olympia, who tells her Apollo is avoiding her and that she's trying to encourage him to meet with his possible father.

Hearst office: Dr. Tonin tells Veronica she can't help her and confesses she's worried about Apollo.

Hearst College: At the African Student Alliance booth at the job fair, Veronica talks to Zeke. He tells her he and Apollo don't talk anymore. As she walks away, he calls her back to tell her Apollo didn't write Soldier of Misfortune, Dr. Tonin did, and that none of what happened in the book happened to Apollo.

Wallace's room: Veronica tells Wallace that Zeke was Apollo's freshman roommate, and frets about what to do with the information Zeke gave her. Wallace suggests she do nothing, as conscripted child soldiers in Africa are a fact, and the book draws attention to them no matter who wrote it. He shows her pamphlets from Invisible Children, a non-profit group that sends volunteers to Uganda to help. At the job fair, the Invisible Children booth was crowded, and Wallace worries that if Apollo is exposed as a fraud, no one will help the children. Olympia calls to tell Veronica that Apollo is on his way back to his room.

Apollo's room: Veronica overhears a phone conversation that makes it sound like the Soldier of Misfortune movie is off. When Apollo goes to check on his laundry, Veronica redials his phone, revealing that he was talking to someone from Silver Pictures. When Apollo returns, he agrees to the blood test.

Logan's suite: Dick enters and heads for his room. He stops when his father addresses him from the balcony. Dick is first surprised, then truculent. Mr. Casablancas says he's turning himself in, and before he goes to jail for a year, he wants to spend time with Dick. Dick snorts his distaste and remains unimpressed with Big Dick's gesture. When Dick mentions he's going to be gone on a surf trip with Logan, Mr. Casablancas grows angry that his son doesn't want to spend time with him.

Mars Investigations: Kizza is confused about why Veronica would tell him that Apollo's movie deal didn't go through. When she clarifies that Apollo won't be coming into as much money as it originally appeared, Kizza tells her that he's been lonely for twenty-one years in a city where he knows no one, and he sincerely wants to meet Apollo.

The next day, Apollo sits through the blood test, but Kizza hasn't shown. When Apollo suggests Kizza isn't coming, Veronica remains hopeful and asks for more time.

Sheriff's department: Vinnie, sans Members Only jacket, sashays about the room, noting changes he plans on making in the decor. Keith insinuates that Vinnie is in the Fitzpatrick's pocket and asks him about his involvement with Safe House security systems. Vinnie admits to having done consulting for them in the past, and when Keith asserts his theory that Vinnie is colluding with the Fitzpatricks, Vinnie dares Keith to prove it.

Mars Investigations: Veronica and Apollo have waited an hour, but Kizza hasn't shown. Veronica apologizes, and Apollo says he's not disappointed as he didn't expect anything. He reveals that he and his friends set Veronica up with false information, and he really did write Soldier of Misfortune. As he's leaving, Veronica gets a phone call from Keith telling her that Kizza is in jail asking to make his one phone call to her.

Sheriff's department: Kizza and Apollo meet. Kizza mentions Apollo's mother named him for the god of music after a mythology book she loved so well. Apollo recognizes the book and they embraces as father and son.

Hearst College: Wallace signs up to volunteer for Invisible Children in Africa.

Max's room: Mac delivers a handful of brochures on possible career paths for philosophy majors. Max lays it out that he plans on selling his "study guides" for a while, but not forever. Mac tells him it changes things between them, but as long as she can go back to her regular life outside the love shack, they can keep seeing each other. They make up.

Big Dick's suite: Dick storms in, tearful, and calls his dad out for not showing up for Cassidy's funeral. Dick asks if he thinks Cassidy died because they tormented them, and he says he can hardly live with himself.

Logan's suite: Logan tells Dick that he invited Parker to South America. Dick tells Logan that since his father came home, he can't go surfing anymore. Logan doesn't exactly look broken up about his summer plans tanking.

Parker's room: Parker bubbles about their upcoming summer together, and Logan breaks the news that the trip is canceled because Dick had to back out. He cites the expense, and Parker doesn't seem to buy it, but she claims to understand and guesses she'll be going to Denver. She glares moodily at him as he tries his best to avoid her gaze.

Mars residence: Piz and Veronica are cuddling on the couch, watching TV, when a commercial for Vinnie's campaign comes on. It's about as humble and sincere as Aaron's endorsement for Duncan's presidency was way back when, but if you didn't know Vinnie, it'd probably garner your vote. Veronica mentions that Apollo and Kizza's blood tests matched. Keith gets a phone call and hands it off to Veronica. She hangs up and tells her dad that she got the internship with the FBI. Piz pretends enthusiasm when he asks if the internship is in Virginia, but when he hugs her, he looks less-than-ecstatic.
