Sophomore Year

Fall 2003

Veronica's sophomore year at high school.

Yolanda begins attending Neptune High as a junior. During her first day, Duncan and Logan are equal opportunity oglers. Luckily Lilly isn't the jealous type. Veronica quickly befriends Yolanda and helps her find her class. While his parents are in Nepal, Logan invites the gang to the biggest blowout of all time. Lilly and Veronica tell Yolanda she must go to Logan's twice a year party. (1.13 "Lord of the Bling")

Jackie gets screwed up with drugs, booze, and all the wrong friends.

She gives birth to a baby boy. (Her kid is two-years-old in 2.22 "Not Pictured.") (2.22 "Not Pictured")

Timothy Foyle becomes Professor Laundry's protege. (3.06 "Hi, Infidelity")

Professor Laundry has several affairs. (3.06 "Hi, Infidelity")

unknown date

Lilly and Veronica are in Lilly's car talking about the pep squad and boys. Veronica joined the pep squad for the PE credit; Lilly joined to meet boys. (Implying that she wasn't dating Logan at the time or she wasn't that serious about Logan.) Lilly warns Veronica that Celeste will try to break her and Duncan up because Celeste would hate anyone that Duncan might love more than her. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

unknown date

Lilly shows Veronica a "spy pen," which has a secret compartment, that she is going to use to pass notes to all her lovers. Veronica says that's going to be a very busy pen. (I'm assuming this happened during sophomore year because they are in the back of Logan's SUV.) (1.19 "Hot Dogs")

unknown date

Veronica and Lilly sing, dance, and mug for the video camera while hanging out in Lilly's room. Lilly shows Veronica some naked photos of a guy she meant in Italy last summer. Lilly hid the photos in the vents because Celeste is noisy. Lilly leaves fake phone numbers from Tyrone, Leory, and Chico in her room in order to really upset her mom. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

September 2003

The day before homecoming Lilly tells Veronica that she's strapless red satin, not yellow cotton. Veronica is surprised when Lilly tells her that the dance is just a lame excuse for their private limo party. The next night Veronica, Duncan, Lilly, and Logan have the time of their lives at the best dance ever. During a game of "I've never..." Veronica and Duncan reveal they are virgins. (1.04 "The Wrath of Con")

Late September 2003

A couple of weeks before the murder, Lilly and Veronica make fake IDs to sneak into clubs. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

(Note: According to Rob Thomas's minor-spoilery TWoP interview, Logan and Lilly's breakup, Duncan and Veronica's breakup, and Lilly's murder occur within a two-week span.)

Veronica, Lilly and Yolanda hang out in Yolanda's bedroom. Lilly is deciding whether to choose the Jude Law type or Colin Farrell type for her next boyfriend because Logan's constant insane jealousy is getting on her nerves. Lilly ditches Logan's party that weekend because she doesn't want Logan to get all crazy violent whenever a boy undresses her fabulous self with his eyes. Veronica jokes that she and Yolanda will have to party for three; Veronica rolls her eyes when Lilly snarks that they will have to party for two and an half. Lilly and Veronica invite Yolanda to the San Diego fleet week. (1.13 "Lord of the Bling")

Lilly is pissed at Logan and she stands him up at a party. At the party Veronica sees a hammered Logan kissing some other girl for like three seconds. Lilly breaks up with Logan after Veronica tells her about the kiss. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

Duncan, Veronica, and Yolanda attend Logan's party without Lilly. Logan thinks Lilly is jerking him around, and he doesn't believe her "I'm sick" excuse. As Veronica and Duncan leave the party, she goes back upstairs to get her purse, and sees Logan and Yolanda kissing. (1.13 "Lord of the Bling")

At school, Veronica tells Lilly that she saw Logan and Yolanda kissing. Lilly angrily tells Veronica, "I don't know a Yolanda, do you?" (1.13 "Lord of the Bling")

Yolanda asks Veronica to talk to Lilly because the rumor that she threw herself at Logan is a lie. She swears that they were just talking, then Logan just kissed her, but it didn't go anywhere. Veronica caves to peer pressure, takes Lilly's side, tells Yolanda, "You should have known better," and leaves a totally cool person on her own at a new school. Veronica and Lilly go to fleet week without Yolanda. (1.13 "Lord of the Bling")

A few days before Lilly's murder, Celeste calls Veronica and leaves a message telling her she had important information involving Lianne and Jake. Lianne thinks Celeste is trying to break up Duncan and Veronica. Lianne overhears the message, calls Jake, and deletes the message. (1.16 "Betty and Veronica")

before September 25, 2003

The September 25 diary entry says it's been over a year since Duncan dumped her.

After Celeste tells Duncan that Veronica is his sister; he tries to cut Veronica out of his life. (Note: It's unclear if this occurred before or after the choking incident) (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

The week Duncan and Veronica break up, Logan finds Duncan on the floor, with his hands around Jake's throat. Logan tries to pull Duncan off, but Duncan suddenly goes limp, and is himself again. Jake doesn't say anything to Logan about the attack. The next day at school, Duncan acts like he doesn't remember a thing. (Note: It's unclear whether Duncan's violent fit occurred before or after he dumps Veronica.) (1.17 "Kanes and Abel's")

Veronica asks Lilly if she knows why Duncan is ignoring her. Lilly says Duncan has been acting weird the past couple of days. Next day Lilly tells Veronica that she needs to move on, it's for the best, and she deserves better. (1.07 "The Girl Next Door")

Before Logan goes to Mexico, he knows Lilly is seeing someone. He doesn't know if he would scream at her for treating him like dirt or beg her to take him back. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

The week Lilly is killed, Logan, Dick, and Beaver are down in Mexico surfing. Logan buys Lilly a "I got baked in Ensenada" shot glass from a tourist shop. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

October 1, 2003

Aaron secretly videotapes his sexual encounter with Lilly. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

October 3, 2003

Logan wakes up early in the morning and drives to Neptune to see Lilly. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Duncan goes to soccer practice in the morning. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

A dozen people and a timecard confirm that Weevil is at his community service detail from 8 am to 2 pm. (1.19 "Hot Dogs")

The last time Veronica speaks to Lilly is at the pep squad carwash. Lilly tells her, "I've got a secret. A good one." (1.01 "Pilot")

As Logan watches Lilly at the carwash from across the street, he senses that it is over between them. He writes a note to Lilly, and leaves the note and shot glass in her car. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Jake and Celeste claim they were having a "2.5 hour tryst" during Lilly's official time of death. (It wasn't specified if their "tryst" occurred before, during, or after Lilly was murdered.) (1.16 "Betty and Veronica")

4:00 pm is Lilly's supposed time of death. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

At the supposed time of Lilly's murder, Lianne meets with Jake at the hotel room and tells him that he must get Celeste to back off. Otherwise, if Celeste tries to contact Veronica again, she will have a paternity test done and take him for millions. Celeste, who had been following Jake around, bursts into the hotel room. Lianne leaves, then no more than twenty minutes later Lianne sees Celeste leaving the hotel. (1.16 "Betty and Veronica")

Abel is with a hooker, Deborah "Cheyenne" Collins, at the time of Lilly's murder. Koontz has a standing appointment the same time every week with her. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

While waiting for Aaron at his poolhouse, Lilly tells Aaron, "Come on lover, time to earn your keep." Lilly discovers the video cameras in the pool house. Lilly steals the videotapes and takes off. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

After leaving Aaron's place, Lilly runs a red light. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Lilly has a bunch of parking tickets and a moving violation dated October 3. She's caught speeding at 6:02 pm. This means none of the Kanes have alibis during her actual time of death. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

Lilly hides the videotapes in the air vent in her room. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

According to Aaron, he and Lilly fight and then he follows her home. Duncan finds them and he is furious. Duncan starts ranting and raving and Aaron leaves. (2.06 "Rat Saw God")

Aaron smashes Lilly's head in with an ashtray. (2.22 "Not Pictured")

Aaron goes to the Kane house, finds Lilly at the pool, and demands that she returns the videotapes. Lilly tauntingly tells Aaron he can watch the tapes on Access Hollywood along with the rest of America. Aaron picks up something from the table, whacks Lilly upside the head, wipes his fingerprints off the object, dumps it into the pool, and leaves. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Later that night Lilly is found murdered at the Kane estate. (1.01 "Pilot")

Duncan arrives home, sees Lilly's body by the pool, and freaks out. He clutches her in his arms, and repeatedly pleads with her, "Lilly, wake up!" "Lilly. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Lilly, wake up." (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Jake and Celeste arrive home and find Duncan covered in blood and clutching Lilly's body. Celeste screams. Jake screams, "Duncan, what have you done?!" They assume he killed Lilly during one of his fits. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

According to cell phone records, Jake calls Clarence five minutes before they arrive home. (1.17 "Kanes and Abel's")

Jake, Celeste and Duncan are at the scene of the crime before Keith arrive. (1.06 "Return of the Kane")

Keith is the first one to the scene and he asks the Kanes some questions. Jake says he and Celeste were home five or ten minutes before discovering Lilly's body. He says they knew the kids were home, so he went to the pool to check up on them. Celeste says Duncan got home before them and was showering when they arrived. During the interview, the dryer timer buzzed. Keith finds Duncan's soccer uniform in the dryer. (1.17 "Kanes and Abel's")

Crime scene photos of Lilly's room show a post-it note: "Meet Veronica. Call about pilates session. Meet Duncan for coffee." and a pair of sneakers that were later "found" on Koontz's houseboat. (1.06 "Return of the Kane")

The police find a "I got baked in Ensenada" shot glass, but not the letter, in Lilly's car. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

The same day Lilly died, a little girl from Weevil's neighborhood named Marisol Reyes went missing. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

(Interestingly enough the police files reveal the writers' original storyline for Lilly's murder. In the file, it says that Lilly was last seen leaving the car wash in her VW bug at 1 pm. Her body was found 7 days later by the PBS underwater dive team in the ocean among the seaweed. Her backpack and shoes and watch were missing. The only suspect is Jake Kane. And Lilly had strangulation marks on her neck. 1.01 "Pilot" and 1.06 "Return of the Kane")

On or after October 3, 2003

Beaver and Dick promise "to the grave" to keep Logan's secret that he left Mexico. (It's not revealed when Dick and Beaver made this promise.) (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

Monday, October 6, 2003

Duncan is in the back of a limo, with no memory of the past three days. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

early October 2003

Days after Lilly's murder, Veronica gets the fake IDs. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

Ms. James holds counseling sessions right after Lilly's murder. Veronica was inconsolable. Eli was profoundly affected by Lilly's death and threw a chair against the wall. Based on their conversation, it seems that Ms. James only had sessions with Veronica and Weevil right after Lilly's death. However it seems that she and Duncan had been meeting regularly because of the fact that she knew about the old standby medicines and antidepressants, which he started taking 7 months after Lilly's death. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

unknown date

Brian (whose brother is a resident at the hospital) tells Ashley that Duncan was brought in the hospital, kicking and screaming, foaming at the mouth, calling out Veronica's name. It took three orderlies to get him into a straight jacket. (1.14 "Mars vs. Mars")

A week later while in the bathroom Veronica overhears Carrie Bishop and Susan Knight say they are surprised that she and Duncan lasted as long as they did. Susan accuses Veronica of dating Duncan only for his money. Carrie says Duncan is loony bin crazy and tells Susan about Brian's story. (1.14 "Mars vs. Mars")

Norris steps in and helps Veronica as 09ers blow spitballs at her during lunch. (1.18 "Weapons of Class Destruction")

October 22, 2003

Veronica makes her first how to survive high school list, which is exactly the same as the second list, except only 985 days until graduation. (Diary August 28th 2004)

November 2003

Six weeks after Lilly's death, the crime scene video is leaked and posted on the net. A teary eyed Logan confronts Veronica about her father destroying the Kanes. "What's the matter with you people?" (1.01 "Pilot")

Claire and Patrice Pitrelli are part of the Theta Beta pledge class. The Thetas take Patrice and some other pledges to a secret room, have them undress, and circle all the parts that need work with a permanent marker. Patrice, who is pudgy, is practically covered with circles. The Pi Sigs are watching and laughing their asses off. Chip calls Patrice a marshmallow and the nickname sticks. (3.08 "Lord of the Pi's")

Late Fall/Winter 2003

Keith interrogates Jake and Celeste separately about their whereabouts that night. During the interrogation, Keith is suspicious that Jake can't answer basic questions about the supposed two-and-a-half tryst at the Neptune Grand. During her interrogation, Celeste confirms they were in the hotel for two-and-a-half hours, but she contradicts Jake's claim that the TV was on in the background. (1.16 "Betty and Veronica")

Keith is convinced that Jake and Celeste were involved in covering up Lilly's death. He thinks it's completely out of character for the Kanes to be doing their own laundry the night Lilly was murdered. Keith thinks Jake called Wiedman after he discovered Lilly's body. As Jake's alibi falls apart, Keith questions the official time of death because the core body temperature didn't match the timeline. Keith thinks Wiedman, an ex-Army intelligence officer and ex-FBI agent, did something to Lilly's body to affect the results of any tests as to time of death. (1.17 "Kanes and Abel's")

The last time Jake and Keith were in the same room together, Keith accused him of being involved in Lilly's death. Jake says he was at work during the time of the murder. After the interrogation Jake goes to the press and says he was wrongly accused. (Goof: Jake's alibi in the pilot is different than his alibi in Betty and Veronica.) (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

The cops question Eli about those letters he wrote to Lilly. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

Keith searches Weevil and his home, and does a DNA test, but nothing comes up. (1.19 "Hot Dogs")

Woody Goodman signs the petition to remove Keith from office.

(Potential goof: According to 1.17 "Kanes and Abel's", the police found Lilly's shoes two months after her murder, which means Keith was fired and Abel was arrested in December. Since Don Lamb was the Sheriff at the time of Veronica's rape, this means Keith lost his job before December 6th. According to 1.01 "Pilot", Keith lost his job one month before Lianne left. Since Lianne left after receiving the photos in February, this means Keith was fired in January.)

November 19, 2003

While the other Thetas are tanning on the roof of the sorority, Patrice walks out onto the roof and strolls off the edge. (3.08 "Lord of the Pi's")

after November 19, 2003

Patrice is in the hospital for a couple of months. Afterwards, she is transferred to a mental health facility. (3.08 "Lord of the Pi's")

December 2003

Keith is fired because of an emergency recall election. (In 1.01 "Pilot" Veronica said Keith was fired one month before her mom left.)

After losing his job as Sheriff, Keith announces to Lianne and Veronica that he is going stay in Neptune and try to make a living as a private detective. This is the last straw for Lianne. (1.16 "Betty and Veronica")

before December 6, 2003

Logan, Luke and Sean buy some Liquid X in Tijuana and bring it to the party to have some fun, like "go to a rave" fun (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

After December 2003

December 6, 2003

Veronica goes to Shelly Pomroy's party to show the 09ers whispering and backstabbing did not affect her. (1.01 "Pilot")

Luke's flashback: Dick complains "Beaver is getting all the loving. Dick's flapping out in the breeze." Madison is pissed that Veronica is at the party. Dick massages Madison's neck to calm her down, but she tells him get his hands off her, and then she walks away. Luke gives two doses of GHB to Dick to help loosen up his avoiding-alcohol-because-of-Atkins-diet girlfriend who doesn't do as much as he wants her to do. (1.22 "Leave It to Beaver")

As Veronica walks through the crowd of 09ers, she spots Logan, and then walks past Duncan as he is making out with a girl. (1.01 "Pilot")

Madison's flashback: Dick passes Madison a cup of regular soda, which she does not want because she is on a diet. Madison sees Veronica, gives her "a trip to the dentist" by spitting into the cup, and passes the soda-spit-double-dose-GHB cocktail to Veronica. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Veronica does not notice who hands her the drink and later assumes that it was "your basic rum, coke, and roofie." (1.01 "Pilot")

The last thing a drugged Veronica remembers is walking outside to the pool area and passing out on a lounge chair. (1.01 "Pilot")

Meg's flashback: As Meg and Cole leave the party, they see a group of 09ers cheering as guys do shots off Veronica's body. Meg tells Cole, "We can't leave her like that." Meg leaves with Cole after seeing someone push a guy off Veronica and pick her up from the lounge chair. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Logan's flashback: Duncan charges in and angrily pushes a freak off Veronica, who can barely sit up. Duncan tells Logan to leave her alone. Logan slips GHB into Duncan's drink because he wants Duncan to have some fun. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Madison's flashback: Veronica makes out with everyone at the party including Dick, Casey, and "the garage door." As Veronica is singing "I Touch Myself," she energetically runs up to Dick, pushes him on the couch, runs her hand through his hair, and starts kissing him. Dick tells her it's not cool and pushes her away. Veronica then climbs onto Casey's lap and flirts with him. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Casey's flashback: Dick grabs a stumbling Veronica, puts her hands on his chest as he sings "I Touch Myself," and pulls her down to the couch. Veronica tries to balance herself by holding onto Dick's head of hair. Dick kisses Veronica and then tells her to see Uncle Casey. Veronica clumsily crawls onto Casey's lap. Casey says, "No thanks, I like mine to stand on their own power." (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Luke's flashback: Luke assumes Madison didn't take the GHB because he sees a very angry Madison defacing Veronica's car. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Casey's flashback: Veronica says she wants to go home. Both Dick and Sean pour shots down her throat and tell her that Shelly Pomroy is a hot foreign exchange student that she has the hots for because they want to see Veronica and Shelly make out. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Present day: Sean tells Veronica that it was Dick, not him, feeding her drinks. He also says Dick and Beaver were horrible to her. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Sean's flashback: Sean passively and silently watches as Dick carries an unconscious Veronica into the bedroom. Dick tells Beaver that Veronica is a ready-and-willing, cute piece of ass. Dick taunts a reluctant Beaver that an unconscious Veronica is the best that he can do because he's not real big with the sober chicks. Dick tosses Beaver some condoms and pulls Sean out of the room. Sean gives a concerned look as he leaves Beaver alone with Veronica. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Dick's flashback: Dick walks by the guest bedroom and sees a wasted and slutty Veronica flirting with Beaver and pulling him towards the bed. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Beaver's flashback: After Logan leaves with Cindy, a girl Dickie tried to set Beaver up with, Dickie brings Beaver into the guest bedroom with Veronica. Dickie pulls up Veronica's dress as he runs his hand up her legs. Sean offers to draw Beaver a diagram. Beaver pulls Dick's hand off Veronica's thigh, and tells Dick and Sean to go because he can handle things. Sean tosses him some condoms. After the guys leave, Beaver asks Veronica if she is okay, and then runs out of the room and hurls on Carrie Bishop's shoes. He leaves a passed-out Veronica in the bedroom. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Veronica's theory/Beaver's flashback: Beaver rapes an unconscious Veronica, thereby giving her chlamydia. Beaver does not tell Dick about this. (2.22 "Not Pictured")

Present day: Beaver swears he never touched Veronica. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Duncan's flashback: A wasted Duncan walks into the guest bedroom, sees Veronica lying on the bed, and brushes her cheek and arm. Veronica wakes up, tells him she misses him, and they proceed to have sex. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

Carrie's flashback: Carrie walks by the guest bedroom and sees Duncan and Veronica tearing each other's clothes off. A disgusted Carrie shuts the bedroom door. (1.21 "A Trip to the Dentist")

December 2003

Marisol Reyes's body is found. (1.12 "Clash of the Tritons")

The police find Lilly's shoes two months after her murder on Koontz's houseboat. (1.17 "Kanes and Abel's")

Anonymous tip leads Sheriff Lamb to Abel Koontz's houseboat, but no one collects the $100,000 reward. (1.02 "Credit Where Credit's Due")

Clarence Wiedman is the anonymous tipster who used a voice scrambler during the call. "I know who killed the Kane girl. His name is Abel Koontz. He lives in a houseboat on the marina." (1.11 "Silence of the Lamb")

As Keith and Lianne are packing and arguing about the Kane case, news breaks that Sheriff Lamb arrested Abel for the murder. Koontz is a disgruntled former software designer who was fired during the development of the streaming video software at Kane Software. Sheriff Don Lamb discovered Lilly's backpack and shoes (flip-flops) on Koontz's house boat. (1.01 "Pilot")

Abel was found with Lilly's bloody backpack and shoes (sneakers with Veronica's heart Duncan doodle). He also gave a confession on the spot. (Huge continuity goof when they show both the pilot flip-flop footage and the newly shot sneakers footage during the newscast.) (1.06 "Return of the Kane")

Abel knew he was dying when he confessed. (1.14 "Mars vs. Mars")

Abel Koontz turns down Dershowitz, Cochran, and Shapiro, and hires Cliff McCormack, a public defender who failed criminal law, as his lawyer. (1.08 "Like a Virgin")

Lianne makes Veronica see a shrink for 6 weeks every Thursday. The VMVO doesn't say if the February 4th session was the first or last session, so those 6 sessions could have occurred between January and March. (1.09 "Drinking the Kool-Aid")

Thursday February 4, 2004, 4:45 -5:30 pm

Clarence Wiedman takes photos of Veronica outside the shrink's office during book week. (Another goof: February 4th was actually a Wednesday.) (1.09 "Drinking the Kool-Aid")

February 2004

Lianne receives photos of Veronica with bull's-eyes drawn over her face. She puts the photos in a safety deposit box but does not tell Keith. (1.05 "You Think You Know Somebody")

Three days before Lianne leaves, she comes to school and wants to take Veronica to Palm Springs. At the time Veronica thought the incident was just one more on the growing list of odd things her mom was doing and chalked her nerves up to the vodka. (1.05 "You Think You Know Somebody")

Veronica trashes the goodbye note and the unicorn music box that her mom left. The note says "Veronica, I have to leave for a while. I'll be back for you soon. Love always, mom." (In 1.01 "Pilot" Veronica said her mom left 8 months ago.)

April 2004

Duncan starts taking anti-depressants. (In 1.03 "Meet John Smith" Celeste says Duncan has been popping pills for six months)

Summer 2004

Veronica was raped at Shelly Pomroy's party. (Goof: In 3.04 "Charlie Don't Surf," Veronica said Shelly's party occurred in summer 2004, but Rob Thomas, Phil Klemmer, and John Enbom admitted that was a mistake.)

During or after summer 2004

A couple of Piz's high school friends drive down to Sunnyside early in the morning to surf. Piz cannot go because of his crappy summer job. (Piz doesn't mention the exact year, but he would have to be at least 16 to work, so this puts the date during or after 2004.) (3.19 "Weevils Wobble But They Don't Go Down")

July 2004

The nimrod landlord at the apartment complex promises to fix the hot water. (1.09 "Drinking the Kool-Aid")
