Teen People (Literature)

"Yeah, she's cute in a Hilary Duff, meet-you-at-the-galleria, Teen People kind of way. She's not hot."

Yeah, 'cause we giggling, teenage girls only know cute, and, and you boys are so mean to make fun of us and, and so dirty. You only want to see naked breasts! When it first started in 1998, Teen People magazine was a huge success, tapping into the rapacious public thirst for celebrity and entertainment news and repackaging it for teenagers, and, particularly, for teenage girls. It was de rigeur for girls in the know. Freshman Owen's comments, as he and his friends score the girls of Neptune High, illustrate gender differences in adjudging beauty.

"Don't forget. You're a high school girl. Do some high school girl things now and then."
"Relax, Dad. I'm cutting pictures of Ashton out of Teen People as we speak."
"You better be. Gotta run, sweetie."

High school girls aren't the only ones who drool over pictures of heart-throb movie and TV star Ashton Kutcher. 40-something-year-old Demi Moore, the love of young Ashton's life, thinks he's pretty cute, too, and she probably saves his clippings from Teen People, an adolescent magazine. Veronica appeases? teases? her dad by implying that she giggles and squeals over Ashton like most other teen girls. He seems satisfied with the lie. Or chooses to ignore it. Same difference.

"I think I read in Teen People that a clean leg shave will make that special boy sit up and take notice."

Teen People, the Tiger Beat of Generation Y. In addition to featuring teen-magazine staples like cool makeup tips and advice on boys, TP, like its parent publication, People, has all the celebrity gossip fit to print. Who is Justin dating now? Who's that dreamy boy in that movie? Is Lindsay in rehab? But Veronica must have been hanging out in a dentist's office or something, because People disowned its younger sibling in April of 2007. Time to find a new advice columnist, V.
