411 (Words, Sayings, and Slogans)

"Gave him the 411 on our video-playback capabilities..."

411, the telephone number to dial in America to reach directory assistance, has made its way into everyday speech. When giving someone "the 411," you're telling them what's going on. Why this is simpler than saying, "I told him what's going on," I have no idea. Crazy kids.

"Breaking news. Record this date in history. First time Wallace Fennel got the 4-1-1 before the little birdie got it to you."

Like Kleenex, Tampax, and Coke, some branded products are so ubiquitous that their commercial name comes to be used for the thing itself. This can also extend to services, like directory inquiries or directory information. For many years, 411 was the number used throughout most of the United States for getting phone numbers, to the point where "getting the 4-1-1" came to mean getting information on anything. Thus Wallace brags that he's obtained a juicy piece of knowledge before Veronica. Or that he made a call. But on balance, we reckon the former.
